Program

Location:

  • Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas
    • Approximately 1000 bed quaternary care center
    • Large ECMO population with platinum excellence ELSO award
    • Kidney transplants in a year: 150+ (2020)

Schedule:

First year: 5 mo. + 2 weeks Consults, 1 mo. Inpatient Transplant, 1 mo. Outpatient transplant, 1 mo. of self-directed research, 2 weeks at UTSW-Mineral metabolism clinic (“MBD Research”), 6 weeks Elective, 1 mo. Procedures (2 weeks in MICU and 2 weeks in IR/Kidney Biopsies)

Second year: 5 mo. Consults, 1 mo. Inpatient Transplant, 1 mo. Outpatient Transplant, 1 mo. of self-directed Research, 2 weeks at UTSW-Mineral metabolism clinic (“MBD Research”), 10 weeks Elective, 1 mo. Procedures (2 weeks in MICU and 2 weeks in IR/Kidney Biopsies)

On call:

Real call schedule for August 2021, Fellow Dr.Diaz PGY-5
  • Weekday calls:
    • One night call per week
    • In house call: 4:30 PM to 12:00 AM where you are responsible for in patient consults, ER consults, transplant admissions, pre transplant preps, patient calls from Dallas Nephrology Associates- CKD clinic, transplant clinic, floor calls.
  • Weekend call:
    • One weekend per month.
    • Saturday, Sunday: 7:00am – 4:30pm
  • New fellows start call in August after ABIM examination.

Teaching activities

  • Weekly topics with Dr. John Schwartz, MD who is a part time faculty and previous Nephrology Fellowship program director at BUMC.
  • Bi-weekly pathology conference with Dr. Daniel Savino, MD
  • Chief’s conference with Dr. Wiederkehr, Tuesdays
  • Faculty teaching conference, Wednesdays
  • Noon nephrology conference, Thursdays

Outpatient activities

  • Monthly outpatient home hemodialysis clinic
  • Monthly outpatient peritoneal dialysis clinic
  • Biweekly / weekly incenter hemodialysis rounding
  • Weekly CKD clinic with assigned Faculty member
  • Monthly Fellows CKD clinic

Transplant

  • Large transplant center with Lung, Liver, Heart and Uterine transplantation
