Michael Wiederkehr, MD FACP, FASN
Chief of Nephrology
- Fellowship: UT Southwestern
- Hometown: Zurich, Switzerland
- Areas of interest in Nephrology: There is really no area I dislike in nephrology, which is one of the reasons I chose this specialty, it’s so broad! But I do have some areas that I’m more passionate about, such as peritoneal dialysis, hypertension, kidney stones, any electrolyte and acid/base puzzles (not just potassium), metabolic bone disorders, and renal physiology, this one mainly because it remains so difficult to understand, it’s an ongoing learning process, very challenging.

Akinwande Akinfolarin, MD
Co-Program Director
- Hometown: Ibadan, Nigeria
- Fellowship: Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA
- Areas of Interest in Nephrology: I trained in basic science research at the Bonventre Lab in Boston and I have always been interested in trying to figure out the “why” of things. The kidney is an intriguing and ever so elusive organ with a lot of “mystery” to it. I have always found it fascinating to try to figure out these complexities, even when they appear so abstract and challenging. As a lifelong learner, being a Nephrologist has been very fulfilling, as it always keeps me busy trying to learn the specifics of how to keep every one of my patients healthy. I believe I am the best advocate for their kidney health and it’s such a privilege to serve them in that role. I am passionate about acute kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, renal replacement therapies and hypertensive disorders.

Gates Colbert, MD
Co-Program Director
- Hometown: Texas
- Fellowship: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX
- Why Nephrology? I’ve always been interested in dissecting a patient’s history, chart, and lab trends to figure out the diagnosis. Nephrology requires a smart detective mindset and I enjoy the process. Baylor Dallas is a fantastic environment for learning and to care for all kinds of patients. Our hospital and team allow me to be the Physician I want to be for my patients. Twitter: @DoctorGates
